Crime Reductions In England And Wales

The volume of reported crime in England and Wales fell by 9% in the 12 months to March 2008, new figures suggest.

Amongst the five million recorded crimes, all main categories saw a decrease, apart from gun crime, which was up 2% and murder, which rose by 3%.

The Home Office say that figures show that offences are concentrated in hotspots and are not spread evenly around England and Wales, adding that the findings are in keeping with worldwide trends of falling crime.

The figures, published by the British Crime Survey (BCS), says that there were 22,000 knife-related offences last year, including grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, woundings and robbery.

The report also claims that wile the risk of being a victim is at its lowest since the first BCS figures in 1981, high proportions of people still believe that the rate is increasing.

However, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she was "extremely pleased" with the overall reduction.
