Deportation Woman Wins Battle For Future In The UK

A South African woman who faced deportation has won her fight to stay in the UK.

Josie Pasane, 25, has been granted a visa allowing her to stay in the country indefinitely.

Josie and her family arrived in Scotland from South Africa in 2001. They settled in Broughty Ferry and in 2004 Josie's mother and sister applied for permanent residency status.

At the time of the application Josie was told that she did not have to apply until her visa fully expired due to being in full-time education.

It later transpired that the information was incorrect and the Home Office later refused Josie's application.

The Pasanes blamed "poor advice" from immigration officials for the situation.

A happy and relieved Josie told the Guide and Gazette that she was "over the moon with happiness".

"I'm very grateful for the tremendous support that I have from Dundee, my community in Broughty Ferry, my church, my family and friends, and the support from beyond Dundee as well," she said.

More than 3,500 people had signed a petition to allow Josie to stay in the UK.

The decision to grant her permanent residency status was made at a meeting with the UK Borders and Immigration Agency set up in Glasgow yesterday.

It is understood that the early stages of the interview dealt with the problems that occurred in 2004. Josie was then given a full apology.

"The fact that they apologised and admitted mistakes vindicated my decision to fight for my right to stay in the country," she said.

A spokeswoman for the UK Border Agency said that "where a judge invites the Home Office to consider the use of discretion in a particular case, we normally review the case in light of those comments and, if appropriate, in exceptional cases we may reconsider our decision".
