Six people have died in a collision between a car and a lorry in Leicestershire, police have confirmed.

The A607 near Melton Mowbray was closed in both directions following the crash.

Police were called to the scene of the collision about a mile south of the town centre at 1.55am on Thursday.

A 48-year-old man, who was the driver of the lorry, was arrested in connection with the incident but has been released with no further action. He is receiving treatment at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Leicestershire Police said in a statement: "Six people travelling in the car, a black Ford Mondeo, have died, they are all believed to be young. The car is thought to have been travelling along the A607 towards Leicester."

Sergeant Simon Atkin of Leicestershire Police said:"We are still trying to establish their identities, but it is believed the six young people were from the Leicestershire."

The A607 is expected to be closed for most of the day. Diversions are in operation but motorists travelling in and around the town should expect delays.

A full investigation is taking place.
