Man Dies In Tram Collision
A man has died following a collision with a tram in Manchester city centre. The accident happened at the G-Mex station, near Deansgate on Friday morning. Police say that the man was freed and taken to North Manchester General Hospital where he later died from serious head and chest injuries. It is understood the man was trapped under the tram for a short time before he was released. Passengers were taken off the tram while emergency services worked to free the injured man. It is reported that the driver said that the "appeared to jump" in front of the tram.
A witness said that the victim was "a young lad" and that the driver "was in a right state" after the incident. Metrolink services on the Eccles and Altrincham lines were suspended for around two hours after the incident but full service has now been resumed.
Elderly Woman Suffers 'Monstrous' Attack
An 85-year-old woman has been stabbed and raped in her own home, police say. The assailant forced entry into her home in the Smithills area in the early hours of Friday morning as the victim was trying to lock her kitchen door. Officers have made an arrest but are still appealing for information. Police say that the offender bundled her back into the house and subjected her to a "vicious physical and sexual assault". It is understood the attacker initially demanded money but then stabbed her with a small knife in the hand and leg. Police say that the woman was then raped several times. It is believed the attack lasted between 30 minutes and an hour, after which the offender escaped. Detective Inspector Paul Hitchen of Bolton CID said: "This was a disgusting and vicious attack on an elderly lady in her own home. She is obviously very distressed but she is receiving medical treatment for her wounds, which are not serious and is now in the care of friends and family. We are determined to catch the man responsible for this monstrous attack. If anyone recognises the description or knows who committed this heinous crime I urge you to get in touch." The man has been described as white, in his late teens and around 5 ft 4 ins tall. He had short dark hair and was of a slim but strong build. He also spoke with a local accent. Anyone with information is asked to call 0161 856 5740.
