Brown Expected To Face Tough Vote Over Terror Laws
Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to face a tough battle as the government continues to try and secure support for its controversial anti-terror plans, as MPs begin debating the package.
MPs will vote on controversial plans to increase the period that suspects can be held without charge to 42 days on Wednesday. The vote is widely expected to be tight and there is speculation that the vote could be so close that the result could depend on how the nine DUP MPs vote.
Meanwhile, Scotland's chief legal officer, Lord Advocate Eilish Angiolini has become the latest person to speak out against increasing the detention time limit. She told the Herald newspaper that "the requirement for an extension to the current 28 days is not supported by prosecution experience to date".
A protest against the plans to increase the detention time limit has been organised by human rights pressure group Liberty to take place outside the Commons tomorrow.

Blair defends plans to renew Trident
Tony Blair has continued to defend government plans to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system. Speaking during Prime Minister's question time, Mr Blair said that the system was essential for Britain's security and that the decision on replacing the nuclear submarines should be taken now. MPs will vote on the issue around 7pm on Wednesday evening.

Tony Blair has been handed the first defeat of his Premiership as MPs voted against controversial plans to increase the maximum detention period for terror suspects to 90 days. The government lost the vote by 322 votes to 291 - a majority of 31. The vote was expected to be tight.

Decision On Terror Detention To Be Made Today
The decision on proposals to allow 42-day terror suspect detention will be made in parliament today. However, it is expected that a concession will be offered to appease those who are against the extension. It is understood that it will involve compensation of £3,000 a day for every day beyond the current limit of 28 days.
