Nationwide Hunt Launched For Suspected Paedophile

Warwickshire Police have launched a nationwide appeal to help trace a suspected child rapist who has been missing for nearly a year.

Brian Hughes, 63, from Rugby, is suspected of abusing children over a 40-year period. His crimes are believed to include the rape of a young girl whom he had befriended over a period of seven years.

Hughes disappeared from his family home in Overslade last July after his family became aware of his alleged activities.

He left a note apologising for his actions, which said: "I can't apologise enuff for what happened. I shudnt hav did wat I did and there is no excuse. I'm sorry for the devastation I hav caused. If I cud change things I wud. I am so ashamed of myself. Bye."

No contact has been made with his family since he disappeared, apart from a blank Christmas card, which was sent.

Hughes remains missing, despite an extensive search and police fear that he may be living elsewhere in the country in a family environment where he could potentially be grooming other children.

It is believed that Hughes had used internet dating sites in order to meet women.

He is described as silm, with blue eyes and was last seen with short dark brown hair.

Police investigator Peter Herring said: "This man is a danger to the community and needs to be found. We are aware of four victims, girls and boys - one of whom was four, but we fear there may be others who haven't come forward.

"It is essential to trace him and I would ask anyone who believes they know where Hughes is, to call police immediately. Even if the description of him doesn't exactly match the person suspected of being Hughes - he could have changed his appearance - anyone suspicious of someone should call police; it is very easy to eliminate someone if it isn't Hughes."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on: 01926 415000.
