Suspended Sentence And Driving Ban For Former Footballer

Former Premiership footballer, Steve Claridge, has received a suspended six-month jail sentence and a driving ban for dangerous driving.

Claridge, 42, of Fareham, Hants, was convicted last month of driving at 100mph on the M42 near Solihull, West Midlands on 30 December 2006 in "treacherous conditions".

Claridge, who appeared before Birmingham Crown Court, has also been sentenced to 150 hours community work.

The former Leicester City striker, who works as a football pundit on BBC Five Live, had denied the charge.

Last month, Claridge told Coventry Crown Court he had been travelling at just over 70mph as he tried to exit the M42 to find a toilet. When he was pulled over by an unmarked police car, Claridge told police that he was "desperate" for the toilet.

He admitted undertaking two cars but denied that he had been driving dangerously.

It was revealed after the verdict was delivered that Claridge already has nine points on his licence.

Claridge also played for a number of other clubs, including Birmingham City and Portsmouth, throughout his career.
