Government Reveals Congestion Charge Plans For Manchester

The government has announced plans to impose congestion charges in Manchester.

The controversial plans, announced by Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly today will mean drivers entering the outer area of the city will pay £2 per day.

Motorists crossing the inner zone to reach the city centre could then be charged a further £1.

In total, drivers would have to pay £5 to get in and out of the city during peak times.

The scheme is part of a £2.8 billion transport package with over half of that amount coming from government funding.

Mrs Kelly said that "a combined package of investment and transport" will "deliver much more growth across the city".

"It's essential that we provide people with greater choice over how and when they travel, cut congestion on our roads and take the right decisions for our quality of life, the environment and the long term health of our economy," she said.

Those opposed to the charges, such as local employers, had called for a referendum on the issue.

The Greater Manchester Momentum Group (GMMG) has been formed to fight proposals.

If the scheme gets the green light, Manchester will become the first major city outside London to introduce congestion charging.

It is estimated that the scheme could cost motorists up to £1,200 a year.
