Officer Dies In Training Exercise

A policeman has died after being shot during a training exercise in Manchester. The incident occurred today at 11.35am on Thorpe Road in Newton Heath. A statement released by Greater Manchester Police said the officer had "suffered a gunshot wound" which resulted in "a serious chest injury". The officer was taken to North Manchester General Hospital where he later died.

A GMP spokeswoman said that the training exercise, which took place at the site of a former electronics factory was "reasonably routine". The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been notified and has sent three investigators to the scene to carry out an initial assessment. It is not clear if the officer had been accidentally shot by one of his colleagues. Police have sealed off entrances to the site.

Toddler Injured In Airgun Shooting

An investigation is underway after an 18-month-old girl was shot in the leg by a pellet gun.

The incident happened on Sunday morning when the girl was walking with her mother and pet dog in a Merseyside park. The youngster had been playing in a field known as the Duckeries, off Fleet Lane, Derbyshire when she wandered into some nearby bushes. Her mother was alerted to her cries and found that her daughter had been injured. After being admitted to hospital the toddler was permitted to go home but was to return to hospital to have the pellet removed today. Detective Inspector Chris Sethron said that the incident "could have been much more serious" and has urged any witnesses to come forward. Mr Sethron added that the matter was being taken "very seriously". House to house inquiries are being carried out and high visibility patrols are in operation.
