Government Plans 'A Swim For All'
Swimming pools could be free for all by the London 2012 Olympics, according to the Government.
The first stage of the initiative will give over 60's free admission to swimming pools.
Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Andy Burnham says that the next step will be to give under-16's free entry, then everyone by 2012.
It is hoped that this will encourage more people to take up the sport ahead of the London Olympics.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown who is to host a sports summit will also publish the Government's own legacy plan for the Games.
Mr Burnham said the initiative will "improve the health of the nation, improve peoples' health, happiness and well being".
Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell said that there is "something for everyone" in the plans and "every section of the population".
However Lib Dem spokesman Don Foster has told the Daily Mirror that the plans have arrived "far too late" and that the government will "have no hope" of reaching its target of getting two million more adults into sport by 2012.
In Wales, under 16's already benefit from free swimming in the summer and over 60's outside school holidays.
