Elderly Man Dies After House Attack

An elderly man has died after being attacked in his home.

Eighty-nine-year old Harold Lindley was found with serious facial injuries by neighbours in Walker Grove, Walker in April.

The Northern Echo Newspaper has reported that Mr Lindley was a retired captain in the Green Howards regiment who had served in India, Africa and Egypt.

Northumbria Police say a post-mortem examination into Mr Lindley's death will be carried out today.

A Northumbria Police spokeman said: "Mr Lindley, who was assaulted in his home in April, sadly died in hospital.

"Our inquires are continuing today into the circumstances in which Mr Lindley suffered his injuries."

Reports say that the elderly man had lay overnight following the attack.

Mr Lindley allegedly had his wallet, cash and bank card stolen.

A 21-year-old man, named as Michael Stephenson of Westbury Avenue in the city, has been remanded in custody on charges of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Lindley leaves behind him two children.

Around 25 people were injured when a coach crashed on the M4 near Newbury on Wednesday evening. The incident happened around 7pm, when the private hire coach came off the westbound carriageway, between junctions 14 and 15, and plunged around 30ft down an embankment.

Man Dies Following Street Attack In Huddersfield
A man has died after he was attacked in a street in Huddersfield. The victim, aged 69, is understood to have suffered head injuries in the incident. West Yorkshire Police said the man was assaulted near the KFC restaurant on New Street at around 11.12pm on Wednesday night.
