Manslaughter Conviction After 'Dog Chain' Row

A man has been convicted of the manslaughter of Martin Wilder, 33, at Croyden Crown Court after an altercation which occurred last summer over a dog chain.

41-year-old Derek Davis of Charlton was found guilty of the manslaughter of Mr Wilder in Charlton Street NW1.

Mr Davis and his companion were involved in an exchange with Mr Wilder on 2 August, 2007. When Mr Davis' companion stopped to speak with Mr Wilder, he became agitated and threw a dog chain at the men. When the men continued to talk, Mr Davis armed himself with two large knives and verbally attacked Mr Wilder, before Mr Wilder fell on one of his knives, resulting in his death.

DI Zoe Harris, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command said: "This is tragic for all involved, because of the involvement of knives, Martin is dead and Davis is looking at a long prison sentence.

"My thoughts are with Martin's family, friends and local community affected by this tragic and unnecessary death."

The jury returned a not guilty verdict of murder and a majority verdict to guilty of manslaughter.

The sentence will be handed down on the 23 May at Croyden Crown Court.
