Former Minister Held After Alleged Assault

A former Welsh Office Minister has been arrested following an alleged assault on a Conservative party canvasser.

Rod Richards, 61, a former Clwyd West MP has been accused of attacking the party worker who was canvassing door-to-door on Wednesday evening.

He was held over night at Cardiff’s Fairwater Police Station for questioning. It has been reported Mr Richards got into an argument after four Tory local election workers knocked on his door.

A spokesman for the Welsh Conservative party said: "One of our guys was assaulted and contacted the police and I understand he [Mr Richards] was arrested last night."

He also said the man was "shaken by the experience of it more than anything else".

A South Wales police spokeswoman confirmed: "A 61-year-old was arrested in Fairwater last night on suspicion of common assault.

"He is currently in custody being questioned in Fairwater police station."
