Second Newlove Killer To Launch Appeal Bid

A second youth, jailed for killing Garry Newlove, is to appeal against his sentence.

Stephen Sorton, 17, from Warrington in Cheshire, was jailed for life in February for his part in the killing of Mr Newlove, 47.

He was told that he would have to serve a minimum of 15 years.

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed that Sorton had made an application for leave to appeal against his sentence.

Last month, Adam Swellings, 19, from Crewe also lodged an appeal bid against his sentence.

Swellings, the ringleader of the gang, which attacked Mr Newlove, was also jailed for life in February and ordered to serve a minimum of 17 years.

A third youth, 16-year-old Jordan Cunliffe, formerly of Warrington, was also jailed for life for his part in the killing and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years.

It is not yet known if he plans to lodge an appeal bid.

Mr Newlove was attacked by a gang outside his home in Warrington, when he went to confront them over damage caused to his wife's car.

During the trial, the court heard how the 47-year-old salesman had been "kicked like a football" in front of his wife and three teenage daughters.
