Bradley Jailed For Multiple Murders
David Bradley, an ex-soldier who killed four members of his family, will serve at least 15 years in jail.
Bradley was sentenced to four life sentences at Newcastle Crown Court.
Bradley, 41, shot his uncle, aunt and two cousins at close range with a handgun he reportedly smuggled back from Bosnia while serving in the Army, in July 2006.
Psychiatrists have agreed that Bradley was mentally ill at the time of the shootings but have not recommended that he be sent to a psychiatric hospital, as his condition is not treatable.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw has instructed that Bradley is detained at Rampton secure hospital in Nottinghamshire for an "undetermined period of treatment".
Judge David Hodson said when sentencing Bradley: "From all I have read for this case I am of the opinion that your psychiatric disorder and mental illness are of such a degree it may never be safe for you to be returned to the community.
"I do not wish to part from this case without expressing the court’s profound sympathy to all members of this family, which has had to endure such catastrophic loss and has had to wait for such a long time for the case to come to a resolution."
Bradley confessed to the murders of Peter and Josie Purcell, both 70, and their sons Keith, 44 and Glen, 41 at West Road Police Station.
He had served as a Royal Artillery gunner in the first Gulf war, Bosnia and Northern Ireland.
