Plane Wreckage Found In Scottish Highlands
The wreckage of an aircraft has been found in the Scottish Highlands with the remains of a person inside.
Police confirmed that the wreckage of the plane was found on Cairngorm Mountain, around 1km from the Funicular Railway, by the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team on Sunday afternoon.
Police are now trying to trace the pilot's next-of-kin.
It is understood that the plane, which only had a male pilot onboard, took off from Carlisle around 9am on Saturday.
However, the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers and disappeared from radar screens as it ran into bad weather.
A wide-scale search was launched, involving two RAF rescue helicopters and six mountain rescue teams, but the search was hampered by poor weather conditions.
The search became centred on a 50-square-mile area, following reports that witnesses had saw a plane and then heard a loud bang.
Police said that a report on the incident would be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
