Number Of Marriages 'At Lowest Level Since 1895'
The number of marriages taking place in England and Wales has fallen to its lowest level since 1895, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics has revealed.
The ONS said that 236,980 took place in England and Wales in 2006. In Scotland, marriages dropped 3% to 29,898, while the number of weddings in Northern Ireland fell by 1% to 8,259.
Overall, the number of weddings taking place in the UK dropped to 275,140 in 2006 - a drop of 4% from the previous year.
The ONS said that the marriage rate for men in 2006 was 22.8 men marrying per 1,000 unmarried aged 16 and over. This was a decrease from 24.5 in 2005.
The marriage rate for women in 2006 was 20.5 women marrying per 1,000 unmarried women aged 16 and over, down from 21.9 in 2005.
The ONS also said that there have been more civil ceremonies in England and Wales than religious ceremonies since 1992.
In 2006, civil ceremonies accounted for 66% of all ceremonies - an increase from 59% ten years earlier.

Hotel Balcony Plunge Boy 'Unlawfully Killed'
A six-year-old boy who died in a fall from a hotel balcony in Crete was unlawfully killed, an inquest has ruled. Liam Hogan, from Bristol, died from severe head injuries after falling from the balcony of the room at the Petra Mare Hotel in Ierapetra in August 2006, along with his father, John, and two-year-old sister Mia.

The number of divorces in England and Wales in 2011 was 117,558, a decrease of 1.7% since 2010, when there were 119,589 divorces, according to the Office for National Statistics. The number of divorces in 2011 was highest among men and women aged 40 to 44.
