Brown Sets Out Security Plans

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has laid out plans to deal with national emergencies.

His National Security Strategy will also allow for the ‘national register of risks’ to be made public and for more transparency overall.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Mr Brown said that the last few decades has seen a rise in threats to national security.

Under the new plans, the role of the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) will be strengthened to improve scrutiny and a 1,000 strong civilian task force will be created and put on standby to aid states and countries coming out from conflict.

The Prime Minister also said that four regional counter terrorism units and four regional intelligence units would be implemented to improve police ability across the country.

In regards to nuclear warfare, Mr Brown said that Britain would use diplomacy to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world.

"Our new approach to security also means improved local resilience against emergencies, building and strengthening local capacity to respond effectively in a range of circumstances from floods to possible terrorism incidents," he said.

The Prime Minister said there would be "greater transparency" and that the ISC would hold their sessions in public rather than in secret.
