Man Still Questioned Over Heathrow Alert

Police are continuing to question a man who sparked a major security alert at Heathrow airport on Thursday by running onto a runway.

The man was arrested as he ran onto the north runway, carrying a rucksack around 2:30pm on Thursday. Armed police detained him and a controlled explosion was carried out on his bag. However, no explosives were found.

It is believed that the man gained entry to the airport by scaling the perimeter fence.

Last month, Greenpeace protestors breached security at the airport to climb on top of a jet in protest at proposed expansion plans at Heathrow.

The latest incident happened the day before the Queen was to officially open the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow.
