'Happy Slapping' Teens Sentenced
Three teenagers who beat a man to death in a "happy slapping" attack have been sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.
Mark Masters, 19, from Keighley, West Yorkshire and Sean Thompson, 17, from Bradford, had pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Gavin Waterhouse.
Masters was sentenced to seven years in a young offenders' institution, while Thompson was sentenced to six years.
A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, who filmed the attack on a mobile phone is due to be sentenced on March 18. She had pleaded guilty to recording the attack at an earlier hearing.
The girl's conviction is believed to be the first of its kind in England and Wales, the Crown Prosecution Service has said.
Mr Waterhouse, 29, died after he was attacked by Masters and Thompson in Keighley last September.
The court heard how the girl had been given the phone by one of the youths and told to "video this".
She then went to Mr Waterhouse and asked him for money before the two youths attacked him. The girl then filmed around 15 seconds of the attack on the phone.
Mr Waterhouse managed to return to his flat following the attack, but died three days later from internal injuries.
Prosecution witnesses claimed that they heard the youths boasting about the attack and claiming that it was not the first time that they had attacked Mr Waterhouse.
