Cheltenham Restaurant Loses Roof
One of the temporary structures at the famous Cheltenham racecourse has lost its roof after being damaged by strong winds yesterday.
A restaurant in the tented village bore the brunt of the storm and debris from the roof lay across the marquee below.
The strong winds that are sweeping across the UK has forced Cheltenham organisers to cancel the second day of the festival. Senior staff at Prestbury Park met today to discuss the possibility of postponing the second day of the world famous event.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase was one of the races due to take place today, and around 55,000 punters were expected to arrive at the festival.
Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: "We had gusts up to 48mph or so causing a little bit of damage to temporary structures in the tented village which are being assessed. We think we have got away lightly."
Mr Claisse reported a slight ease in the ground thanks to the overnight rain.
He added: "The ground has obviously eased a little with the rainfall. I've given it as good to soft, good in paces on the Old Course, good on the cross-country and good to soft, good in places on the New Course for Thursday and Friday."
