No Negligence Probe For Scarlett's Mother

The mother of murdered British teenager Scarlett Keeling will not be investigated for possible negligence, police in Goa have confirmed.

Fiona MacKeown, 43, from Bideford in Devon, had left her 15-year-old daughter in the care of a 25-year-old local tour guide, while she and the rest of her children travelled to another part of India as part of a six-month holiday.

Scarlett was found dead on Anjuna Beach on February 18. Local police had originally said that the teenager had accidentally drowned. However, a murder investigation was launched following a second post-mortem, which showed that the Scarlett had been attacked.

A 28-year-old man appeared in an Indian court on Monday, charged with raping Scarlett. However, Samson D'Souza has not been charged with the teenager's murder. He has been remanded in custody and is being questioned by police.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mrs MacKeown had denied that she was negligent, but said that she was naive and trusting.

Mrs MacKeown, who had said that her daughter had been murdered from the beginning, has accused the Goan police of attempting to cover up their mistakes over the investigation. She has written to Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to ask for his help in the case.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday afternoon, it was reported that police in Goa are seeking a British man who may be a potential witness in the case.
