July 7 Bombers' 'Pal' Jailed Over Terror Manual

A friend of two of the July 7 bombers has been jailed for possessing an al Qaeda training manual.

Khalid Khaliq, 34, from Beeston, Leeds, pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing a document or record containing information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism at Leeds Crown Court on Monday.

He was sentenced to 16 months in prison on Tuesday.

Khaliq had been pictured white-water rafting in north Wales with suicide bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, a month before the attacks on the capital's transport network, which left 52 people.

He was also a volunteer at Iqra book shop, which was a centre for young Muslims in Beeston, and which was a focus of police operations following the London bombings.

Prosecutor David Farrell QC told the court that the manual included a declaration of Jihad, an interview with Osama bin Laden, weapons information and details of how to deal with being interviewed by police.

Judge James Stewart QC also ordered another charge of possessing a book called 'Zaad-e-Mujahid (Essential Provision of the Mujahid)' to lie on file and instructed the jury to find Khaliq not guilty of another charge of possessing the book 'The Absent Obligation'.
