Teen Pleads Guilty In 'Goth' Kiling Trial
A 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to the murder of a 20-year-old woman who was attacked in a Lancashire Park last year, at Preston Crown Court today.
The youth admitted to the murder of Sophie Lancaster and attacking her boyfriend Robert Maltby on August 11, last year.
The admission came as the trial of five youths accused of murdering Ms Lancaster and attacking Mr Maltby got underway.
Murder charges against three of the youths - two aged 17 and one aged 16 - have now been withdrawn. They have been remanded in custody, after pleading guilty to GBH.
One 15-year-old youth will stand trial for murder - he denies the charge, but has admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The trial, which is expected to last three weeks, is due to begin on Wednesday. The other youths are expected to be sentenced following the conclusion of the murder trial.
None of the youths can be named because of their age.
Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby, 21 were attacked in Stubbylee Park in Bacup on August 11, 2007.
The pair, both 'Goths', were beaten in a vicious assault.
Sophie suffered serious head and facial injuries and died in hospital nearly two weeks later, having never regained consciousness.
Mr Maltby, an art student, was also left in a coma following the attack. He suffered bleeding on the brain, but recovered and has since left hospital.
