Scarlett Rape Suspect Appears In Court
A 28-year-old man arrested in India in connection with the alleged rape and murder of British teenager Scarlett Keeling in Goa, has appeared before a court.
Indian police detained Samson D'Souza after witnesses alleged that they saw him sexually assault the 15-year-old on a beach at the Anjuna resort on February 18.
Scarlett, from Bideford in Devon, was found dead on the beach shortly afterwards.
Mr D'Souza told the court in Mapusa that he had been with the teenager on February 18, but claimed to have left her at 5am and said that she was still alive.
He has been charged with rape, but not with killing Scarlett. He has been remanded in custody for 14 days.
Following the discovery of Scarlett's body, police had initially said that they believed her death was an accidental drowning, due to her drinking too much.
However, a murder investigation was launched following a second post-mortem. The doctors conducting the examination found 50 bruises and abrasions on her body. They also found that she did not have enough water in her lungs to have drowned.
Scarlett's mother, Fiona McKeown, has insisted that her daughter was murdered from the beginning.
She told reporters that she is "not confident" that police have the right man and accused them of trying to "cover up" their mistakes.
Mrs McKeown also told reporters that she had written to the Chief Minister of Goa, requesting that the country's Central Bureau of Investigation be brought in to investigate the case.

Scarlett Keeling Murder Suspect Released On Bail

Samson D'Souza, 29, had to surrender his passport and was told he cannot leave the southern state of Goa. He faces charges under the Indian penal code for murder, rape and drugging with intent.

Placido Carvalho was arrested on Wednesday and appeared in court today. He has not been charged, but has been remanded in custody for 14 days to give police more time to question him.
