UK Teacher Escapes Jail Over Defamation

A court in Ethiopia has freed a British teacher after being convicted of defamation over comments she made when exposing paedophiles while working at a children's charity.

In 1999, Jill and Gary Campbell compiled evidence, which helped convict the director of an Ethiopian orphanage, which was run by the Swiss charity Terre Des Hommes-Lausanne.

David Christie was sentenced to nine years of hard labour for abusing young boys, four years later. The report on sexual abuse at the home, compiled by Mr and Mrs Campbell, led to the charity apologising and leaving Ethiopia.

However, the couple accused the charity of covering up the abuse. Terre Des Hommes-Lausanne won the defamation case and Mr and Mrs Campbell were ordered to apologise. However, Mrs Campbell refused to do so.

However, at a hearing in Addis Ababa, the charity asked the court not to sentence Mrs Campbell, because her husband had issued a public apology last month.

After issuing the apology, Mr Campbell said that he had only done so because there would be no one to look after the couple's children if they both went to jail.
