'Disgraceful' Pay Offer Rejected By Prison Officers

Prison officers in England and Wales have turned down a 2.2% pay deal, calling the offer "disgraceful".

The Prison Officers Association (POA) said a massive 85% of their members throughout England and Wales cast ballots rejecting the offer, leading to widespread speculation of further confrontation with the government.

An injunction, which would prevent officers from taking legal industrial action, has now been put into place. This would prevent "wildcat" strikes up until 8 May 2008.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw accepted a pay review body's recommendations for a 2.2% rise, which would come into affect from April 2008.

However, a spokesman for POA said members would be angry at the offer, as it was below inflation, adding: "We were hoping that this year's award would reflect the fact that we are still in dispute over last year’s pay".

Last year the union was in a dispute with the government after it was decided a 2.5% pay rise would be introduced, and phased in two stages.
