Man Arrested Over Dog Attack

A man has been arrested after a nine-year-old boy suffered facial injuries in a savage dog attack.

The 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog, which was dangerously out of control, following the incident in South Shields, South Tyneside. He has since been released on bail.

The boy is now recovering at home, following the attack by the Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog.

He was released by South Tyneside District Hospital last night and is due to see a specialist plastic surgeon.

Police seized the dog and it has been confirmed that it has now been destroyed after the owner gave his consent.

A statement by Northumbria Police said: "The owner of the dog has now paid to have the dog destroyed, which was done on Wednesday morning.

"The injured boy was released from hospital but will be seeing a plastic surgeon."

Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack to come forward.
