MP's Expenses To Be Completed Before The Summer
The House of Commons committee reviewing MPs' pay and allowances will complete its report before the summer parliamentary recess, it announced today.
The Members Estimate Committee said in a special report that as "a first step" it had agreed that the £250 threshold for MPs submitting expenses claims without a receipt would be cut from the start of the new financial year.
The new limit has not yet been agreed, but it is expected that there will be a significant cut.
The committee's review was ordered last month by the Commons Speaker, Michael Martin, after it emerged that a Conservative MP had paid his son a researcher's salary while he was a full-time university student.
However, Mr Martin also faced allegations that he had abused his own expenses allowance by claiming for taxis used by his wife, and for a second home in his Glasgow constituency on which he had already paid off the mortgage.
The Parliamentary Commissioner of standards has been asked by a pressure group to investigate the accusations against Martin.
