Flight Refunds For BA And Virgin Passengers
Thousands of travellers who flew on long-haul flights with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic between August 11, 2004 and March 23, 2006, could receive a refund.
The two airlines have reached agreement on a compensation deal, brought about via a class action suit, brought against the airlines in the US on behalf of passengers.
The deal will now have to be approved by US courts.
Last year, British Airways was fined £121.5 million by the Office of Fair Trading and $300 million by the US Department of Justice for colluding with Virgin Atlantic on fixing fuel surcharges added to the cost of their tickets.
Virgin Atlantic did not receive a fine because it informed authorities of the price-fixing policy.
The compensation deal will see British Airways reportedly pay out £71 million, while Virgin Atlantic is understood to be paying out £30 million.
The deal will entitle individuals or businesses who purchased tickets from either airline in the UK or the US during the specified time frame to claim refunds. It is thought that the refunds would be worth a third of the surcharge on each flight – between £1 and £11.50 per flight.
A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic said that the company believed that the settlement "draws a line" under the incident, while British Airways' Chief Executive Willie Walsh described the settlement as "fair and reasonable".
