McCartney V Mills Blockbuster Opens

It's likely to be a hard days night for Sir Paul McCartney over the next few days as he and his ex-wife, Heather Mills thrash out what is likely to be one of the largest divorce settlements in British history.

The scene is set for a clash of cinematic proportions as Ms Mills, who is representing herself at the private hearing, is said to be seeking a settlement worth around £30 million - after a marriage that lasted less than four years.

Legal experts believe Sir Paul has offered less than half of that sum and the judge is likely to find a solution between those two figures.

Sir Paul is said to be worth £825 million, but most of that fortune was earned before they were married and the case may establish rules about the amounts that can be claimed by the former spouses of the mega-rich.

The hearings are expected to last five days and the judge is predicted to reserve his judgement at the end of the week before giving a written decision at a later date.

The former Mrs McCartney - now plain Ms Mills - turned up in a black Mercedes which pulled up in a disabled parking space alongside the court complex.

The former model, who lost a leg in a road accident in 1993, was ushered from behind the tinted windows of the vehicle and headed for the nearby court, its windows covered to stop anyone seeing through the doors.

Sir Paul arrived a few minutes later, smiling and looking relaxed but declining to comment on the hearing.

Whatever the result, either Sir Paul or Ms Mills will be able to challenge the judgement in the Court of Appeal or the House of Lords, but either of those hearings would be held in public.
