Driver Arrested Over 'Tanker Stowaways'
The driver of a chemical tanker in which eight people were found has been arrested on suspicion of people trafficking.
It is understood that the 55-year-old is being questioned at a south London police station.
Eight people were discovered in the vehicle in southeast London on Friday morning.
It is understood that the people were discovered when the driver of the tanker, which had travelled from Germany, stopped to check his load in Harrow Manor Way in Bexley on Friday morning. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 8am.
However, Sky News later reported that men working on a water main had flagged the driver down after allegedly hearing banging and screaming coming from the tanker as it drove past.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service confirmed that all eight people have been taken to hospital to be treated for minor breathing problems.
Fire crews were also called to the scene and a 100-metre cordon has been set up around the scene in order for the tanker to be examined.
It is understood that the tanker, which is owned by German company H Freund, was carrying a powdered carbon-based chemical.
