Settlement May Be Imposed On GP Opening Hours
The government has said it will impose a settlement on GP opening hours if agreement cannot be reached with the doctors' union, the British Medical Association (BMA).
Health Secretary Alan Johnson is urging every GP in England to accept the government's plans for extended surgery opening hours.
Ben Bradshaw, Minister for Health has said that Mr Johnson is communicating directly with GPs because he is "unhappy" about the way the leadership of the British Medical Association (BMA) has been dealing with the negotiations.
The BMA says doctors are prepared to work extra hours, but any deal should be flexible and should account for the extra costs of staying open longer. The union has so far refused to sanction the deal.
The government wants to see a majority of GP practices offering extended hours and has made an offer that would see an average-sized practice with 6,000 patients open an extra three hours a week.
Mr Bradshaw said about the proposals: "Given that, when you ask the public and patients what the main thing is that they are still unhappy about the NHS, it is about being able to see their GP at a time that is more convenient for them.
"Given this record investment, I don't think it is unreasonable that people should be able to expect to see their GP in the evenings or on Saturday morning."
