Not Guilty Plea Over Rachel Murder
A man charged with the murder of young mother Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common more than 15 years ago has appeared in court today.
Robert Napper, 41, pleaded not guilty to Miss Nickell's murder at the Old Bailey via videolink from Broadmoor secure hospital.
Napper was charged with Miss Nickell's murder in November, following a review of the case.
He was remanded in custody and is due to face trial in November.
The 23-year-old former model was attacked on July 15, 1992 as she walked on Wimbledon Common with her two-year-old son Alex and their dog. She was stabbed 49 times and sexually assaulted.
The hunt for her killer was one of the largest ever seen in the UK, involving interviews with more than 3,000 people and the release of a video-fit of the killer.
Colin Stagg, from Roehampton in west London, was originally charged with Miss Nickell's murder, but he was acquitted in 1994. The judge threw out the case against Mr Stagg because police had used a "honey trap" - a female undercover officer, who feigned a romantic interest in him in order to encourage him to confess to the murder.
