Russia Condemned Over Kinnock Arrest

The UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband has once again condemned Russia over what he has described as the 'blatant intimidation' of British Council staff working there.

Mr Miliband said Moscow had acted in a "reprehensible" way which was "not worthy of a great country" and ran contrary to the law.

He said Russia had taken similar actions during the 'Cold War' but the Government had thought such behaviour was "behind us".

He described Russia's actions as a "stain" on its reputation but said he would not be taking retaliatory action against cultural activities in the UK.

Mr Miliband was addressed the Westminster MPs in the Commons after the arrest of Stephen Kinnock, the Director of the British Council in St Petersburg.

Mr Kinnock, son of former Labour leader Lord Kinnock was detained by traffic officers on suspicion of drunk driving. He was held for an hour before being released.

Several other Russian national employees had also been summoned for questioning by the authorities.

Downing Street insisted it was "completely unacceptable" for Russia to try and intimidate Council staff.
