Paedophile Freed By Bungling Police

One of the UK's most wanted paedophiles - who was mistakenly released after first being arrested – is being urgently sought by police.

South Yorkshire Police officers only realised who Joshua Karney was after he was fined for being drunk, and then released.

Police want to speak to anyone with information on Karney, 30, who was convicted of indecent assault, and is one of five of the UK's most wanted sex offenders after going missing in 2005 from Lancashire.

Karney was arrested at a hotel Barnsley in November last year for being drunk and disorderly, but gave false details.

He was photographed by officers, fined and released. It was only when his fingerprints were examined later it became clear who he was.

South Yorkshire Police have begun an investigation.
