Suffolk Murder Victims 'Placed In Crucifix Pose'
The bodies of two of the five women murdered in Suffolk at the end of 2006 were found deliberately posed in a crucifix shape, Ipswich Crown Court has heard.
The prosecution case against Steve Wright, 49, of London Road, Ipswich, who is accused of murdering five prostitutes in Ipswich in late 2006, is beginning today.
Peter Wright QC told the court that there were "striking similarities" in the deaths of Anneli Alderton, 24, Gemma Adams, 25, Paula Clennell, 24, Annette Nicholls, 29 and Tania Nicol, 19.
All five disappeared during the last two months of 2006 and their bodies were all found near Ipswich during a ten-day period in early December that year.
The court heard that the bodies of Miss Alderton and Miss Nicholls, were found with their arms out-stretched in a "cruciform" shape.
Miss Alderton's body was found in woodland near Nacton on December 10, while Miss Nicholls' body was found two days later in Levington, near Nacton.
Mr Wright said that the victims had been "systematically selected and murdered".
He said that all the woman are believed to have been asphyxiated or had their necks "manually compressed" while under the influence of hard drugs.
The court also heard that Mr Wright had lived in Ipswich's red light district and was a user of prostitutes.
Mr Wright has denied murdering the women.
The trial continues.

The trial of a former pub landlord charged with the murder of five women in Suffolk has begun. Steve Wright, 49, is accused of murdering Anneli Alderton, 24, Gemma Adams, 25, Paula Clennell, 24, Annette Nicholls, 29 and Tania Nicol, 19. He has denied the charges. A jury was sworn in in the case at Ipswich Crown Court on Monday.
