Cargo Ship Sinks In Rough Seas
A stricken cargo ship, whose crew was rescued on Monday, has sunk in rough seas off the Devon Coast.
The Ice Prince sank around 12.45am on Tuesday about 26 miles off Portland Bill. It was being monitored by two tugs at the time.
Some 20 crew members were rescued from the vessel on Monday night. The vessel was carrying 5,258 tonnes of sawn timber and 313 tonnes of fuel oil and lubricating oils in its engine spaces and it is understood that the vessel's cargo of timber had begin to list. An emergency call was sent out at 7pm on Sunday night.
Both English and French coastguards are warning traffic in nearby shipping lanes about the risks posed by the cargo, which has been shed in the area.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have said that initial surveillance reports have indicated that the pollution risk was low, but have expressed concerns that the cargo poses a danger to navigation.
