Tories Call For Tougher Rape Laws

Conservative leader David Cameron has called for tougher sentences for rapists in a speech at the Conservative Women's Organisation conference.

Mr Cameron said: "Studies have shown that as many as one in two young men believe there are some circumstances when it's okay to force a woman to have sex. To my mind, this is an example of moral collapse."

The Tory leader also announced that Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert will carry out a review of punishments for rape to ensure that they are proportionate to the crime, and also called for sexual consent to be taught as a matter of course in sex education classes.

He also pledged longer-term funding for rape crisis centres.

Mr Cameron said that "widespread cultural change" is needed, warning that society has become increasingly "sexualised" and that treating women as sex objects had become viewed as "cool".

The Tory leader also said that some statistics suggest that one in 20 women in Britain has been raped, but 75% of these incidents are never reported.

He also cited research, which claimed that England and Wales have the lowest conviction rates for rape in Europe and said that jail terms for those found guilty to rape have fallen to less than seven years on average.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that the government has taken action in order to improve the conviction rate in rape cases, as well as to help victims.
