Smoke Clouds London In Blaze Alert

There doesn’t appear to be any terrorist connection to a major fire in London that is sending huge plumes of black smoke across the capital.

Teams of fire fighters are now tackling the huge blaze in east London, which London Fire Brigade has said is at an old bus garage in Waterden Road. Eight fire engines are already at the scene.

Scotland Yard said they did not believe there was terrorist link to the incident.

A police spokesman said there was "nothing to suggest it is anything but a fire".

London Ambulance Service said there had been no reports of any casualties, although they did initially send vehicles.

A spokesman said: "We were called today at approximately 12.20pm to reports of a fire on Waterden Road, E15.

"We have sent two ambulances, a fast response car and an officer to the scene."

The fire is in a part of London where extensive redevelopment is taking place for the 2012 Olympics.

Businesses in the road have been re-located recently to enable preparations for the games to take place.

The high-speed Channel Tunnel rail link runs nearby as well and a Network Rail spokesman said the North London rail line had been closed between Dalston and Stratford because of the smoke affecting Hackney Wick station.

Passengers are being advised to consult national rail inquiries before beginning their journey.
