Teen Air Rifle Death 'Tragic Accident'

Police in Gwent have said that they believe the death of 17-year-old Danny Marsh who was shot with an air rifle on Sunday evening may have been a "tragic accident".

The incident happened in the Maesglas Road area of Newport around 6.30pm on Sunday night. Danny was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with an air pellet injury to his chest and he later died.

According to reports, Danny was visiting his grandmother when he staggered into the street and collapsed from his injury about 70 yards down the road.

Two other teenagers, aged 16 and 18 and both from the Maesglas area, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

They remain in custody and police said that there are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The air rifle has been recovered from the scene.

Detective Inspector Dave Edwards, who is leading the investigation, said: "Two people remain in custody at this time assisting us with our enquiries with a view to establishing exactly what happened. On the face of it, it appears to be a tragic accident, however a full investigation needs to take place to make sure the facts are known and to identify whether any offences have been committed as a result of this tragic incident."

Danny's family have released a statement, which described him as "an adored son and brother".
