Critical Day Ahead For Brain Op Watson

The next 24 hours will be critical for singer, Russell Watson who is fighting for life after undergoing emergency surgery to treat a brain tumour.

However, it has emerged that Mr Watson delayed the operation to share a “private moment” with his two daughters, aged seven and 12, his agent Giles Baxendale explained.

The popular opera singer had a three-hour operation on Thursday, and while he has since regained consciousness, today remains in a critical condition.

The 40-year-old father of two was taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Cheshire, after falling ill.

An MRI scan showed the tumour and surgery was needed immediately.

Mr Baxendale said: “It's been a tough day. He looks pretty grim. He’s alive, that’s the main thing.

“He’s out and in intensive care. He’s in a critical condition still and going to stay in intensive care for at least 24 hours more.

“He’s in and out of consciousness, he’s spoken. He was having waves of consciousness,” he said.

Watson underwent surgery last year after being struck down with the same condition in America.

The tumour, the size of two golf balls, was successfully cut out and he made a full recovery.

But he had begun to feel unwell again earlier this week. He was in his studio putting the finishing touches to the last track on his forthcoming album when he began to suffer headaches and loss of vision.

Mr Baxendale said: “No one knew the severity until the early evening.

“It all happened so quickly. He woke up feeling pretty horrendous. Various people who work for him were with him and he was not looking great.

“They called out a doctor and it resulted in him coming straight here for an MRI scan,” he explained.

Watson was told he needed an emergency brain op, but delayed the procedure so he could see his young daughters before going into theatre.

“That’s all he thinks about,” his agent added.

“We went through it last year in America. The one thing is his two girls.

“He was delaying a life-threatening operation yesterday morning.

“I think that’s what everyone thought but no one wanted to say it. People thought he could die.”

His agent also thanked fans for the “overwhelming support” they had shown.

Watson will remain in the hospital’s intensive therapy unit where his condition will be monitored.
