Deportees Fill Two British Jails
It has emerged that two prisons in England are occupied entirely by foreign inmates awaiting deportation.
Bullwood Hall in Essex currently holds 154 prisoners, while Canterbury Prison in Kent is holding another 284, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Anne Owers has revealed.
Both prisons have been taking foreign prisoners since 2006, when former Home Secretary Charles Clarke was sacked in a row over his department's failure to process the cases of 1,000 foreign prisoners who could have been eligible for deportation.
Mrs Owers said that the two prisons had been given specific services, such as language support and advice on immigration issues for foreign inmates, and said that it was easier to provide such services in one place.
Overall, more than 11,000 prisoners in Britain are foreign nationals.
The announcement has been criticised by the Conservatives. Speaking to the BBC, Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Herbert said that if foreign prisoners were deported then there would be extra space in prisons and no need for other prisoners to be released early.
