Fresh Appeal Over 1979 Forest Death

A missing persons charity has made a fresh appeal for information regarding a woman who was found dead in a forest in Kent 28 years ago.

The body of the woman, who was aged between 30 and 35, was discovered in Bedgebury Forest, near Cranbrook on October 23 1979.

The woman was white, about 5ft 1ins tall and of thin build, with brown eyes and dark brown, shoulder-length straight hair. When found, she was wearing a black polo neck jumper, a floral dress and black shoes.

It is believed that she had had at least one child and may have originated from Eastern Europe.

A murder investigation was launched at the time of the discovery and the case was subsequently re-investigated in 1999. Harry Pennells, then 75, a retired lorry driver from Ticehurst in East Sussex, was charged with murder following the re-investigation, but was cleared after a four-week trial at Maidstone Crown Court in 2000.

Missing People said that they had checked their records for clues to a possible identity, but had not been able to make a conclusive match and the woman's identity remains unknown.

Teri Blythe, Head of Missing People's Identification department, said: "In most cases an unidentified person is also a missing person, so it is likely that this woman will have family and friends out there who do not know their fate.

"We therefore hope that this appeal will bring some vital clues that will lead us to identify this body and put an end to someone's distress."
