Body Sought In Jeweller Murder Probe
Police searching for the main suspect in the murder of Nottingham jeweller Marian Bates are now concentrating on searching an area where they believe his body may be located.
This is a change of emphasis for the case, which has seen police hunt James Brodie, 23, from Bulwell ever since Mrs Bates was shot dead during an attempted raid at her jewellery shop in Front Street, Arnold, in September 2003.
Police investigating the murder have been looking for Mr Brodie - then aged 20 - ever since and also wanted to talk to him in connection with three armed robberies and a racially aggravated assault, all of which were committed in a 12-hour period three weeks before Mrs Bates was killed.
Peter Williams, 22, of no fixed address was found guilty of Mrs Bates’ murder at Stafford Crown Court in March 2005. However, the prosecution said that although Williams was one of the robbers, he was not the man who fired the fatal shot.
Nottinghamshire Police have already carried out searches of properties in the Bulwell and Top Valley areas of Nottingham and a further search at the Willows Fish Farm at Wanlip in Leicestershire is being carried out today.
A £10,000 reward, offered by police for information leading to the arrest of whereabouts of Mr Brodie, still stands.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on: 0115 844 6994 or Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.
