Children Orphaned In Parents' Sea Rescue Bid
Three Britons were among four holidaymakers drowned off the southwest coast of Portugal as they attempted to rescue their children from a rip tide.
A German man also died in the incident, which happened at Praia do Tonel in Sangres in the Algarve, on Monday afternoon.
Two of the Britons who died have been named as Bob and Deb Fry, from Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.
It is understood that the other fatality was a British woman. Three other British adults are reported to be in hospital, including the father of one of the other children.
The three parents saw their children getting into difficulties while swimming near a large rock in the bay and, along with the German man, dived in to try and rescue them.
The children were washed ashore and are believed to have suffered minor injuries.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but were unable to save the adults. A lifeboat picked one of those who died up, while the other three were washed ashore, but emergency services were unable to revive them.
It is understood that two of the children have been left orphaned by the tragedy, while two others lost their mother. A female relative is reported to be travelling to Portugal to bring the two orphaned children home.
The bathing season in the region where the incident occurred ended on September 30 and it is understood that there was a sign on the beach warning holidaymakers that no lifeguard was present.
