Fatal Crash Closes M6 In Cumbria
A large stretch of the M6 in Cumbria has been closed following a crash in which a man was killed.
The incident happened shortly before 8am on Monday, when an HGV Scania collided with a transit van between Southwaite Services and Junction 42 on the northbound side of the motorway.
Police, ambulance and the fire service attended the scene. Cumbria Police later confirmed that one man had died.
The M6 is closed between J41northbound and J42 southbound and is expected to remain closed until later today.
The crash has caused major traffic congestion and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Chemical Tanker Fire Closes M6
Part of the M6 motorway in Warwickshire has been shut after a chemical tanker caught fire. Five people are being treated for injuries. The Highways Agency closed the motorway in both directions between junctions two and four after the tanker caught fire between junctions three and 3A.

Funding For New Cumbria Bridge
Over £4.6m of Government funding has been made available to build a road bridge over the River Derwent in Cumbria. The new bridge will replace the bridges damaged and destroyed by last year’s flooding. The funding will cover material, design and construction costs and the new bridge is expected to be open by May 2010.

Increase In Knife Robberies, Statistics Show
The number of robberies involving knives rose by 18% between July and September last year, according to new figures released today. The Home Office statistics also showed that domestic burglaries rose by 4% during the same period, while fraud and forgery was up by 16%. Drug offences have also risen by 9%.

Man arrested following M6 crash
A German man has been arrested following a crash in Staffordshire in which four people have been killed. The 51-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after the incident, which happened at around 19.40 BST on Sunday at Junction 11a on the M6, at Great Saredon, near Birmingham.

Lorry Driver Jailed For M6 Death Crash
A Portuguese lorry driver has been found guilty of causing the deaths of a family of six in a crash on the M6. Paulo Jorge Nogueira da Silva was sentenced to three years in jail after killing the Statham family, of Llandudno, when the 40-tonne lorry he was driving hit their car as they travelled home from Birmingham.
