Boys Sentenced For 'Stoning' Death
Five youngsters - aged between 12-14 - cried and hugged their parents as sentence was passed for killing a man whom they attacked with sticks and stones as he played with his son.
Ernest Norton, 67, collapsed with a heart attack, after he was pelted with stones when he was playing cricket with his 17-year-old James at a leisure centre in Erith, south-east London in February 2006.
The Old Bailey heard how father and son were subjected to verbal abuse, before the children began hurling stones, rocks and pieces of wood at them. Mr Norton was hit on the head at least twice during the assault.
The boys were convicted of manslaughter and violent disorder in August and have now been sentenced to two years' detention each.
Judge Warwick McKinnon said: "This was a vicious, entirely unprovoked and sustained group attack involving a barrage of missiles."
