Guilty Verdict On Vicar Death

A 24-year-old man is to be detained indefinitely in Ashworth Hospital after admitting to killing a vicar in South Wales.

Geraint Evans, 24, of Trecynon, near Aberdare, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Father Paul Bennett on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Father Bennett was attacked and repeatedly stabbed by Evans in the grounds of St Fagan's Church in Trecynon on March 14.

His wife Georgina had witnessed the attack and had tried to pull Evans away from her husband.

The hearing at Cardiff Crown Court heard that Evans, a regular user of cannabis who also inhaled lighter fluid daily, had initially been charged with murder, but that the plea of manslaughter was accepted following the presentation of psychiatric reports.

The court heard that Evans was obsessed with God, the Devil, religion and knives.
