Briton Dies In Thai Cave Drownings
A British man is among eight tourists killed in a flash flood in a cave in Thailand.
John Cullen, 24, was killed in the flood at the cave in Khao Sok national park in the south of Thailand, along with a ten-year-old German boy, four Swiss nationals - believed to be a couple and their two daughters - and two Thai guides.
Mr Cullen's girlfriend, Helena Carroll, 21, from Solihull in Birmingham, was rescued on Sunday following a long search. It is understood that she managed to survive the flood by clinging to a ledge in the roof of the cave. She was treated in hospital and is expected to return to the UK on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters, Miss Carroll described how she clung to the rock while Mr Cullen entered the water. She said that his last words to her were "I love you".
According to Thai police, the group of tourists had been trekking through the park on Saturday. Police also said that heavy rainfall had caused the flash floods, which sent water surging through the cave, which was located near a waterfall.
The Bangkok Post reported that a senior government official was due to travel to the region to begin an investigation into the incident.
Winai Phopradit, the provincial governor, also told the Associated Press news agency that he had ordered the park to close during the current rainy season and said that signs in both English and Thai were in place warning tourists not to enter the cave during heavy rains.
A Belgian tourist was killed during a flash flood in the same cave several years ago.
